What is Content Marketing?

Content marketing is a marketing strategy that focuses on establishing customer relationships, brand development, and increasing internet presence. This is in contrast to traditional marketing strategy which focuses on convincing customers to buy a particular product or service. Many marketing strategist focus their efforts on content marketing over traditional marketing for two reasons. The first is that content marketing is something that can be undertaken with little to no investment. However, this is not to say that it is not possible to spend a significant amount of money on content marketing. The second is that millennials have proven that they will tune out traditional marketing (advertisements, direct sales, etc.) in favor of content that is useful to them.

Content Marketing Methods

Here are a few ways that businesses and individuals engage in content marketing:

Blogging:

Creating a blog and writing interesting, educational, or entertaining posts is an excellent way to get potential customers visiting a website on a regular basis, sharing posts with friends, and getting to know a company's brand a little better.

Developing a social media presence is a big part of content marketing. In fact, it is virtually impossible to carry out a content marketing campaign without doing so. After creating accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other platforms business representatives can interact with potential customers, share and promote their own content, and engage in conversations. This increases the likelihood of people viewing their blog content and exploring their website.

Content Curation:

Curating content is taking content that is available on the internet and reposting it, or sharing it on one's own blog or social media accounts. One of the benefits to doing this is that it provides readers with more content to view, and more reasons to visit a blog or social media page. The other benefit is that sharing content and giving proper credit, is a great way to get other people to like and share content you have produced. This relationship building is extremely important in content marketing.

Article Writing and Guest Blogging:

Many business owners choose to increase their engagement efforts by writing articles for websites that are frequented by those interested in their products and services. These articles frequently contain links to their blog content. This helps to drive customers to their websites and blogs. Guest blogging works in a similar fashion. One business owner might develop a relationship with another blogger who has an audience that matches their ideal customer profile. Once that relationship is established, they may offer to write a guest blog post for the other's blog, or ask them to write a guest blog post. This is a win-win for both entities as the content is seen by more people, and more customers are likely to engage.

SEO is a set of techniques that is used to help insure that content is easily found by people using search engines. This includes using keywords, adding visuals to content, optimizing for mobile devices, and linking to other content.
