First Research Paper at College - Whe Do I Begin?

As you approach your first college research paper assignment, it probably feels like an overwhelming task. There are so many steps to complete, different things due at different times, citations to be completed, research to be done, and more. Relax. Apart from getting college paper help from academic writing service, you are able to get good grades on your own. Nothing is as bad as it seems, and learning how to write a college research paper is no different. It is a complex task, but there are ways to break this all down into manageable steps that you can take one at a time. Before you know it, your first research paper will be in the past, and you will be glad you were up to the challenge. Let’s get started with the easy steps you can take to write a great research paper.

Step One: Topic Selection and Refinement

If this is your first research paper assignment, chances are your instructor has chosen your topic for you. If not, he or she has probably significantly narrowed your options. If you are going to select your own topics, here is what you need to keep in mind:

  • If topic selection is open, choose something that is familiar to you. You’ll still have to do quite a bit of work, but you’ll be a bit ahead of the game.
  • Don’t chooses a topic that is too generalized. Your initial research paper won’t be very long and too broad of a subject won’t allow you to give your paper focus.
  • When possible, choose a topic that has at least some element that interests you.

When you are done selecting your topic, it is time to see if it needs to be refined. Let’s say, for example, that you wanted to do a research paper on the history of the Hershey’s candy company. There are many directions you can go with this, so you must pick. Do you want to do a research paper on the history of American GIs and the Hershey Company? Do you want to do a research paper on new candy developed by the company in the last 20 years? Refinement is what gives you the last bit of topic focus that will make your paper great.

Step Two: Research and Taking Notes

This is a process that simply takes a lot of work. The best thing you can do is take advantage of modern technology. As a student you have online access to many academic databases via your student account. If you have a smart phone, tablet, or other device, please consider downloading one of the many free or inexpensive note taking apps that are available. You’ll be glad you did when you need to review your notes weeks later. Finally, as you do your research, take advantage of the available source citation feature. All you have to do is click a button, and the entry for your works cited page is created for you. Just be sure to save these so you don’t have to create the entries later.

Step 3: Building Your Outline and Rough Draft

As you create and organize your notes, you will have begun developing your thesis, and mentally organizing your points. Take this one step further by creating an outline. Then, take the points in your outline and create your rough draft.

Step 4: The Final Draft

Every iteration of refining and editing your rough draft gets you closer to completing your final draft. Once this is finished, you are ready to create your title page, and wrap up work on your works cited page.
